6th Grade English 

The English curriculum will include the following projects and concepts:

  • Debate

  • Mythology

  • Poetry

  • Journaling the Ancient World

  • What is Culture?

6th Grade History

Over the course of the year, students will work on  projects in order to learn about the following:

6th Grade Math 

The Math curriculum will include the following projects and concepts:

  • Ratio

  • Fraction Operations

  • Rational Numbers

  • Expressions

  • Equations & Inequalities

  • Surface Area & Volume

  • Distributions & Variability

6th Grade Science

Students will work on real world projects to learn the following concepts:

  • Solving a science mystery - The structure of life

  • Seed science - Growth and development of organisms

  • Food - Human impacts on the Earth

  • Climate change - Global climate change

How to Become Financially Savvy

Students will learn how to become financially independent in this course. Students will not only learn basic money skills, but also the critical thinking skills needed to safely navigate the free enterprise system. Topics include:

  • Basic fundamentals of money and decision making.

  • Explain what credit is and identify the role of credit in your life.

  • Separate fact from opinion when you evaluate products and services.

  • Critically evaluate fine print in marketing, advertising, and promotions.

  • Explore the common mistakes made with money.

  • Identify the consequences of being irresponsible with money, including the impact on job prospects.

  • Examine the real-life scary look at financial scams aimed at young people.

 

Physical Education

The entire year all students will participate in physical education 4 times a week. Topics include:

  • Fitness

  • Strength and flexibility

  • Gymnastics/dance

  • Cardio-Fitness

  • Team Sports

  • Volleyball

  • Basketball

 

Digital Citizenship

Students today are using the immense power of digital media to explore, connect, create, and learn in ways never before imagined. With this power, young people have extraordinary opportunities, and yet they face potential pitfalls, too. Digital Citizenship Curriculum empowers students to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in our digital world. These 21st-century skills are essential for students to harness the full potential of technology for learning.

  • Introduces reliable, research-based information to students about digital media and their impact

  • Offers a comprehensive yet balanced approach in addressing safety and security concerns, including ethics and behavior issues, as well as digital literacy skills

  • Includes research-based lessons based on the work of Howard Gardner and the GoodPlay Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education

  • Provides student-centered, media-rich lesson materials that emphasize skill building, critical thinking, ethical discussion, media creation, and decision making to students of all ages

Entrepreneurship

Tomorrow’s jobs and economy are going to be created by leaders and entrepreneurs we foster today. Although, not every child will become an entrepreneur as an adult, the entrepreneurship class will inspire every child to have an entrepreneurial spirit: to lead confidently, think critically and creatively, be financially responsible, and understand the value of teamwork. Topics covered:

  • Applying for a job and forming a company

  • Creating a business plan

  • Pitching your idea to investors and raising start up capital

  • Students produce an animated film

  • Students create commercials
